Milk Thistle: A Popular Plant In Alternative Medicine

Bitter thistle or milk thistle has been a widely used plant within the field of alternative medicine. Therefore, it is possible to find it in different presentations (from capsules to infusions) as a natural remedy.

From the fruits of milk thistle ( Silybum marianum L. Gaertn .) An active principle is extracted, known by the name of “silymarin”, which has been used for thousands of years to treat liver problems.

Does milk thistle help treat liver problems?

In the world of alternative medicine, it is said that the consumption of the infusion of this plant could help filter harmful substances in the blood, before it reaches the liver, thus preventing it from being damaged. In other words, it could prevent the entry of toxic substances into the body and, on the other hand, promote the regulation of cholesterol in the blood.

In another vein, it is also said that it helps to regenerate cells in liver tissues that have been damaged and stabilizes cell membranes.

Silymarin is considered to be a substance that can help treat some symptoms in case of: hepatitis, fatty liver, liver failure, jaundice, cirrhosis and liver failure. However, further research is required.

eye!

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of milk thistle as a treatment for cancer or any other condition.

Although it is widely used in homeopathy and other natural therapies, it is still necessary to continue investigating the composition of this plant in order to confirm (or rule out) the multiple benefits attributed to it.

On the other hand, it should be noted that the consumption of milk thistle does not usually have adverse effects, except in very few cases. For example, patients with liver disorders may experience burning and upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea.

However, it is always advisable to maintain moderation. Only in very high amounts can it produce varied allergic reactions (headache, rash, itching, etc.).

It is not advisable to consume the infusion of this plant as a natural remedy for any disease, nor as a method of prevention. However, its consumption as a hydrating drink can be recommended, as long as it is included in a healthy lifestyle.
