According To A Study, Dandelion Helps Us Treat Eczema

For almost a thousand years, dandelion has been used as a remedy to treat everything from liver disease to digestive ailments and skin problems. More recently, science has proven many of its benefits with data. One of them is related to the treatment of eczema.

Specifically, research being carried out at the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Odense (Denmark) states that dandelion helps to treat dyshidrotic eczema. Here are the details.

“Eczema” is the term used to refer generically to dermatitis or inflammation of the skin. As we know, there are different degrees of dermatitis, from atopic, which is the most serious, to seborrheic or allergic.

It should be noted, however, that eczema and psoriasis are two completely different processes. The latter causes peeling of the skin and causes the whitish appearance of the affected area. Therefore, in this case the dandelion will not be as effective as in that of a simple dermatitis.

Dandelion, a natural purifier

  • This Danish study to which we refer started in 2010 with a group of 20 people. All of them suffered from this type of eczema, characterized by the appearance of blisters on the skin that caused an annoying burning sensation.
  • Dandelion juice concentrate was given over 4 weeks. Within a few days, patients began to experience improvement in this symptom.
  • Within a month, the blisters had disappeared.

The action of this medicinal plant is based on:

Its microbial action

Dandelion sap has long been used as a treatment for skin conditions. Whether used topically or taken as an infusion, it is an effective treatment against microbes and fungi. Likewise, dandelion is an alkaline remedy that helps to effectively cleanse the body and alleviates hormonal disorders that affect the skin.

Antioxidant effect of dandelion

The antioxidant action of this simple remedy acts directly on skin cells to relieve inflammation. Its vitamins A, C, D, and B, as well as magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium, make it possible to help rebuild the tissue affected by dermatitis.

Its action on the liver

When our liver does not filter toxins properly, the effects become visible on our skin: we accumulate fluids, more acne appears, we suffer inflammation and itching. And it even changes the tone of our skin.

  • Taking a dandelion infusion on a regular basis will provide the liver with a good number of antioxidants such as vitamin C and luteolin.
  • By strengthening liver function, our defenses increase, which puts the body in better condition to cope with eczema.

How to take dandelion to relieve dermatitis or eczema

Ingredients

  • 1 glass of water (200 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon of dandelion (5 g)

Preparation

We will do the same as to prepare any other infusion:

  • Bring the water to a boil.
  • Once it comes to a boil, add the indicated amount of dandelion.
  • Let it infuse for about 15 minutes and rest for another 5.
  • Strain the content and, if you want to sweeten it, add a little honey.

When to take it

Consume herbal teas

It is advisable to drink our dandelion infusion every night.

As we have already pointed out, the relationship between the liver and the skin is very close. Therefore, to enhance and take care of liver function, the ideal is to take it before going to sleep. In this way, we promote the regeneration of the body when it carries out its toxin purification tasks.

Little by little, our body will get used to it and will harmonize its detoxification functions to reduce the inflammation that causes eczema.

4 contraindications of dandelion

It is not advisable to take dandelion in any of the following cases:

1. If you have gallstones

Dandelion stimulates the gallbladder by increasing bile production.

2. If you have kidney stones

Kidney stones

Dandelion leaves contain a large amount of oxalates, which promote stone formation.

3. If you suffer from heartburn

Dandelion stimulates the production of gastric juices, which are what cause heartburn or reflux.

4. If you have a stomach ulcer

By increasing the production of gastric juices, the dandelion can cause a worsening of this condition.

On the other hand, you should bear in mind that dandelion cannot be combined with certain medications. Lithium or antibiotics are two examples of this. Hence our advice that you always check with your doctor before taking it.
